LIKKLE MAI is an important singer on the world’s reggae scene who has continued to fascinate fans with her gifted uniquwerful voice.
Likkle Mai is a Japanese reggae singer, song writer, producer, club DJ, who also runs her own independent music label.
She began her career as the main vocalist of a rocksteady group called Dreamlets in 1994, and sang their first EP “A Breath Taking Guy” (released in1996)
The following year, she joined the dub band Dry & Heavy as lead vocalist. The group released four studio albums in Japan, as well as three albums in Europe and the U.S.
The singles “Mr. Blue Flame”, “Radical Star”(achieves No.1 slot on chart of New Zealand’s FM station chart, “Radio Active”), “Dawn is Breaking”, “Love Explosion” and “New Creation” sung by Likkle Mai propelled Dry & Heavy to be one of the leading dub bands across the world, and each all brilliant musical peaces like “I’m A Likkle Lioness”, “Say No More” and “Bright Shining Star” are still loved world wide as Big Tune.
They toured abroad several times in Europe(U.K. France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Spain), Asia(Hong Kong), and Oceania (Australia, New Zealand) , appeared in numerous major music festivals including WOMAD and Big Day Out, and were acclaimed in each place.
They also supported various reggae legends during visits to Japan, such as Lee Perry, Mad Professor, Horace Andy, Adrian Sherwood, and Asian Dub Foundation.
In 2005, Likkle Mai left Dry & Heavy to move on to the next stage in her career. She produced four acclaimed studio albums herself.
The first solo album “Roots Candy” which shows Likkle Mai’s originality and musicality well, released in 2006. Following the release , Likkle Mai toured Japan backed by top musicians from Japan’s reggae scene. These powerful live performances attracted strong attention, and she also increased her fan base at this time by putting on a series of peaceful acoustic live shows.
On her second album “MW”(2007) she perfectly matched Japanese lyrics with Rock Steady, Roots Reggae and Dub tracks. This album came out from her own label named MK Starliner.
Her third album “mairation” (2009) was recorded live performance played by Likkle Mai Band. It was best reggae album of the year of “Music Magazine”
In 2011 after the earthquake and tsunami struck Likkle Mai’s home town she appeared numerous charity events, and she established a relief fund “Love Boat ” to donate boats and tackles to fisherman of disaster area.
Throughout the struggling days Likkle Mai released her fourth album “Dub Is The Universe” in 2012. includes “Open Your Eyes” made by studio session with legendary dub master Scientist, and “Young Soul Rebels” rhythm tracked by Hawaiian talented musician Brad “BW” Watanabe.
She provided the single cut “The Life Is Simple And Beautiful” for commercial film of Japanese popular refreshing drink Pocari Sweat, that features Kitano Takeshi.
“Dub Is The Universe” is also the best reggae album of the year of “Music Magazine” in 2012.
Listening to these solo albums, it is not difficult to understand the evolution of Likkle Mai as an artist.
Likkle Mai has appeared in numerous large festivals in Japan, such as Fuji Rock Festival, Summer Sonic and Rising Sun Rock Festival. In addition, she has continued to support many artists who come to Japan, such as Jah Shaka, Adrian Sherwood, and The Slits.
